Tips to Install A Roof Anchor System
Here are some do it yourself techniques to help you set up roof anchor.
- Getting Up the Roof Safely: If you do not have one, either purchase or rent a ladder that reaches at least 3 ft. You can carry aluminum ladders as it is light in weight. Fiberglass ladders are a far better option as they protect you from electronic gadgets. Set the ladder firmly on the ground. If it is an uneven surface, place wooden blocks on the ground and flatten the surface first. Tie the top of the ladder with a rope so that you do not fall from it. For safety, do not take anything while climbing up the ladder. Carry equipment in a bucket. Keep hands on the topmost rung of the ladder.
- Installing the System: After you are up on the roof, set the roof brackets and planks along the edge of the roof. This helps you in two ways – one, provides you a support to rest your feet and two, it prevents you from falling as the roof brackets act as slide guards. First, examine the area and see where you can nail the roof brackets. You can tap and find a solid area in the top to hammer the nail. If you find the nail missing, take out the roof rafter, apply a little bit of cement and place it on top near the edge. The cement will seal the hole.
In older homes, a rafter measures to 16 inches, while in modern homes the length is 24 inches. Both kinds of homes have a depth of 1 – 1.5 inches. Finish the roof guard by attaching wooden planks of 8 ft. After this, remove the brackets and planks and begin from the top and gradually move downwards. - Fitting and Fastening: The roof anchor needs to be fastened properly to a solid block of wood. The wooden block can be a rafter or truss or a ridge beam. This is the step to set up the harness and the rope. Check whether the lanyard and the harness are loosely stitched. Avoid using already used harness or lanyard, especially when it has a bad report in the past. Examine the rope to prevent wear and tear. For fitting the body wear tightly, adjust the buckles. Mount the roof anchor at a maximum of 6 ft. height from the roof edge. You are free to add as many anchors as you like. If you need to reduce the length of the rope minimize the positioning of the buckle.
