Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are like caps, which are fitted over an injured, decayed, or discolored tooth. You may get one or more teeth crowned as needed. When a tooth is cracked, partially broken, stained or discolored, or highly sensitive for decay and nerve injury,  the best way to protect the tooth from loss and save one from the pain is by capping the tooth. A porcelain type material is used for the cap which is called the crown. The material can be colored and shaped exactly like a tooth, and when the crown is fitted over the affected tooth, the tooth looks normal, new and healthy just like before . This gives the patient a normal smile and tooth functionality back again. One can chew using the tooth, and perform normal oral movements where the tooth is involved.

However, dentists recommend not giving intense pressure on the crowned tooth to save the crown. Intense pressure like breaking and chewing a bone, or cutting hard nuts or edibles can break the porcelain crown, and expose the affected tooth.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is actually a bridge made by anchoring on two crowns. The bridge contains a tooth or a few teeth, which are not real, but prosthetic. These prosthetic teeth are fitted without implanting any post inside the gum as happens in implants. The healthy teeth on either side of the bridge are used as the posts to hold the bridge, and the crowns which anchor the bridge on either sides are fitted over the healthy teeth. When you are looking for an affordable solution to make up for your missing teeth,  a dental bridge can give you back a normal looking teeth line, and you can effortlessly smile, eat, chew, and get back close to the normal tooh  functionality.

However, there are a few restrictions and things to follow when you have dental bridges fitted. They are:
  • You cannot chew hard things or give any intense pressure on the bridged prosthetic teeth.
  • You need to maintain good dental and oral hygiene
  • You must go for check ups to the dentists annually to ensure that the dental bridge is in good health and does not need any adjustment. That’s because with age of the jaw-line shrinks, and the gum shape slightly changes. However, this is not a serious and lengthy process and your dentists can manage it quite well in a couple of visits.

# How Lengthy This Process Is?

You just need to visit your dentist a couple of times. The first time the dentist will take an impression of your teeth, and will decide if you need a crown or a bridge. Also, if you need other dental treatments or procedures prior to crowning, like whitening, stain removal, etc, the dentist will complete those first, and then take the shade and shape of the tooth. The dentist may use an anesthesia on the gums to reduce sensitivity and pain during the procedure.

On your next visit the crown will be fitted with dental glue, and you will be told to wait and rest till the dentist check again and releases you for the day. You will be told to follow a few restrictions for the following one or two days, and light antibiotics or painkillers may be given if the dentists feel it’s required.
